Google Ads Policy Update – Upcoming pre-certificate and verification requirements for election advertising in India

Written by

Google has updated its political content policy for election advertising in India, and will begin enforcing it on February 20, 2019. The updated policy requires that

(1) advertisers provide a pre-certificate issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI), or a source authorized by the ECI, for each election ad in India they want to run, and
(2) advertisers running election ads be verified by Google.

Election ads in India are ads for Lok Sabha Elections that feature a political party, political candidate or current member of the Lok Sabha, or any ads that are run by a political party, political candidate or current member of the Lok Sabha.

Our records show that this policy change may affect your account.

To be verified by Google, advertisers must provide proof of identity and information about where they’re based, and must confirm that they’re legally permitted to run election ads in India. Once verified by Google, advertisers can submit their ad pre-certificates to Google.

Advertisers will be able to apply for verification and submit their ad pre-certificates starting February 14, 2019, and enforcement of the policy will begin on February 20, 2019. Learn more about verification for election advertising in India.
